Spring Fete and Royal Party Crowning
By the time the June Parish News is distributed we will have held our Spring Fete and crowned our new Water Carnival Queen, Maisie Gregory and her attendants, Gracie Quartly, Freddy Harbert and Billy Elkint, who are all looking forward to their roles for this year. Visit our website www.shaldonwatercarnival.co.uk for a review and images of the day's events and of the 2016 Royal Party. 56th Water Carnival Day - 6th August 2016 The committee are now focussed on preparations for the Water Carnival Day on Shaldon beach. Water Carnival Day is a unique occasion taking place in one of Devon’s prettiest seaside villages where villagers and visitors, families and friends get together to enjoy a day packed with fun. The beach becomes awash with traditional stalls and games, food and drinks stalls and lots of events throughout the day, including the fancy dress competition and parade through Shaldon. Later in the day the estuary comes alive with the decorated boat parade which is followed by live evening entertainment and BBQ on The Green. More information on the day's events will be given in the July Parish News but it's not too early to be planning your boat entries for the parade. We had a good turnout last year and some great ideas... what can you think of to amaze everyone this year? If you would like more details or to volunteer to help at our events, you can read more about our activities on our website www.shaldonwatercarnival.co.uk or email Brian at shaldonwatercarnival@gmail.com Our AGM will be held at The Ness Bar & Restaurant in Shaldon on Wednesday 24th February, start time 7.30pm.
All welcome. Come along and meet the committee, find out more about what we do and how we do it. We will also be making the draw for the 2016 Royal Party for the Water Carnival Day which is held on the beach on the first Saturday in August. Come and give your support to the young boys and girls who will be eagerly awaiting the results. We look forward to seeing you there. Shaldon Water Carnival thought it would be lovely to extend some Christmas magic throughout parts of Shaldon with a dressed window competition with a theme of Winter Wonderland and In the first year of this event all businesses and residences from Ringmore Towers to The Ness including The Green were invited to enter for the Shaldon Spirit Cup.
Judging took place on Friday 11 December and it is with great pleasure that we can announce that the winner of the Shaldon Spirit Cup is No 2 The Strand. The full list is:- Commercial 1. Darts Estate Agents 2. Hair Razors 3. Bradleys Estate Agents Residential 1. No 2 The Strand 2. Hunters Lodge 3. Bay Cottage Many thanks to everyone who took part – we hope that this event will be even bigger next year. Thanks also to the judges – Dee Holsworth, Kate Haskell and Alec Collyer – who were very impressed with the entries and found it very difficult to make up their minds. We hope that it gives everyone something to look out for whilst strolling through the village. If you would like to add a photograph of your window to the website, please email images to dee.shaldonwatercarnival@gmail.com Start planning your outfits now for the annual Boxing Day race around the village pubs – a great way to work off the excesses of Christmas!
The starting point for this year’s race will be The Ness, with entrants following a route designed to cover each of Shaldon’s hostelries, for a quick “pit stop” before ending up back at the beach in front of the Ferryboat Inn garden. Registration will be from 10.30 am but you can save time by downloading an entry form... click here The race will start at 12pm after the fancy dress judging at 11.45 and is open to pairs (or groups) with 12’s and over paying £2.50 per runner (under 12’s race for free). The Ferryboat Inn will be the last pub in the race with the finishing line at the beach behind the Ferryboat Inn garden. Dress up and join in or just come along and watch all the antics – we’ll be pleased to see you. Boxing Day Marshalls Needed If you are planning to watch the race perhaps you could do so while wearing a fashion able high-vis jacket! We need marshals to direct the traffic and the runners from noon. Please email us at shaldonwatercarnival@gmail.com or Rachel at The Ness 873480 if you can help. We really need your support to ensure the continued success of this popular village event. Younger volunteers welcome but under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult. High Vis jacket and Christmas Hat can be provided. It is with great regret that the Water Carnival committee have made the decision to cancel this years Christmas party and market. With only three weeks to go and insufficient tickets sold, there is not enough village support to push potential ticket sales any closer to the date without us incurring large financial loss. Thank you to anyone who has shown an interest and please accept our apologies for the cancellation. We look forward to seeing you at our next event, The Boxing Day 3-legged Race with a big welcome to our 2016 committee who are now supporting this and future events.
