2016 - 56th Water Carnival Day
MORNING ACTIVITIES
At 10am, Shaldon's newly crowned Carnival Queen, Maisie Gregory, opened the day's festivities on Shaldon's Ferry Beach. Maisie was joined this year by attendants Gracie Quartly, Freddy Harbert and Billy Elkins. Click to meet the 2016 Royal Party >> |
From 10.15am, the beach played host to a variety of stalls, beach activities and novelty games. Under 14's were able to join in our competitions by creating a sand sculpture, collecting crabs off Clipper Quay or creating an art masterpiece in our colouring competition. The colouring competition and sand sculptures this year were based on mermaids and pirates.
The fancy dress parade set off from Shaldon School, through the village to the beach and was headed up by a rousing samba band who then continued to keep the festival atmosphere alive by playing a set on the beach. This was followed by afternoon treats including Alan Austin's magic and balloon shows and price giving for the children's competitions. DECORATED BOAT PARADE The Water Carnival is best known for it's decorated boat parade which creates a wonderful view on the water. The beach was alive with people along the waterside to watch the fleet of spectacular, diverse and colourful boats that cruised around the “Shaldon Pool” of the Teign Estuary. This year we had twelve boats enter the parade, some of these colourful entries can be seen in the photos below. EVENING ENTERTAINMENT 6pm saw The Village Green come alive for the children's disco, which was followed at 8.30pm by live local band, The Usual Suspects, who played a great set to a packed, partying and dancing Village Green. Many thanks to all who contributed to make this year's Carnival Day a great one! We look forward to seeing you next year!! |
