2015 Water Carnival Day
With the boats cleared and the sand cleaned and raked for us by Tim Biddlestone, the rain just about holding off apart from one shower, local businesses joining us on the beach, a bouncy castle, popcorn, candyfloss and locals and visitors streaming into Shaldon... it must be Shaldon Water Carnival !!! Our 55th and another huge success.
The Royal Party officially opened the Carnival at 10am and this was followed by a visit from a Minion character who provided some fun photo opportunities. The sand sculpture, crab collecting and colouring competitions were extremely well attended this year... we even had to make extra sand squares to accommodate all of our budding sand sculpturers. Well done to all of the boys and girls who entered all competitions.
To keep everyone amused through the day, in addition to our traditional games such as Hook-a Crab, Splat-a-rat, Slide-a-Pint and the Coconut Shy, the games tent again proved popular with traditional games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey and Name the Bear. The bouncy castle and pillow fights kept the more energetic amused whilst The Back Beach Boyz from Teignmouth produced rousing renditions of traditional and popular sea shanties. Lots of local food and drink was consumed and Alan Austin’s magic and balloon shows proved a huge hit once again as children crowded around to watch. We were also treated to another seamless demonstration from the RNLI.
The fancy dress parade was lead by the Crooked Tempo Samba Band, who added a great carnival atmosphere whilst entrants walked through the village and then continued to play their fun and funky music beach.
The unique Parade of Decorated boats was again amazing this year with 14 entries. Well done to all entrants... what imaginations you all have!
We love and appreciate the effort and thought that goes into taking part in both the fancy dress and the boat parade, delighting spectators with some fantastic, bright and colourful ideas.
Early evening saw children dancing on The Green with some lively entertainment and disco music from Alan Austin.
Local band Out of Isca., new to the Water Carnival band list, entertained the crowds with their lively, up to date set. Orsman's delicious BBQ food helped keep up those energy levels!. A great end to a truly wonderful Water Carnival Day.
Radio Devon set up in the village and did live interviews with lots of water carnival people, including The Royal Party.
A huge thank you must go to Chris Clarance, John Lockyer and Steve Astbury who again supported the day with their commentary, keeping the crowds informed and entertained. Thank you, too, to all the local businesses that donated raffle prizes to us, their generous gifts helped us to sell hundreds of raffle tickets, raising money that will be given back to the village later in the year by way of donations to our local organisations and community groups. The high level of cooperation that exists in the village between residents, businesses and other organisations is always much in evidence and the Shaldon Water Carnival Committee are extremely grateful to the support received from the local community.
The page header photos were supplied by Tony Willan and the main body of photos below are by our official photographer on the day, Su Thomas... have fun browsing and trying to spot yourself taking part or in the crowd.
We look forward to seeing you there next year.
