2015 Boxing Day 3-Legged Race Day
115 teams with a total of 272 racers entered Shaldon’s Boxing Day Fancy Dress 3-Legged race this year with hundreds more lining the streets to cheer them on.
The rain held off for us whilst the race was on which was much welcomed by the entrants and spectators. We thank them all for supporting this unique village event and we are constantly amazed at the quality of the costumes that people put together. Where else would you get Christmas crackers, elves, pandas, pieces of lego, a human blackberry phone and crazy Mexicans (to name but a few of the inventive costumes on display) running around a seaside town with legs strapped together and stopping at six pubs for a swift drink? Shaldon of course!!!
The winning fancy dress trophy in the Under 18 category went to a pair of “Chocolate Magic Stars”, Ella and Gracie Quartly from Shaldon, with a “Tiger and Hunter” in second place and “Two Dalmations” in third.
The Best Dressed 18s and Over were locals John White and Jessica Oldfield as “Alice and The White Rabbit”. Runners-up were Susie and Debbie Ashleigh-Thomas as “The Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts” and third were John Webb and Carol Wickham as “The OAPs – Old Aged Polar Bears”!
The Group fancy dress was won by a whole group dressed as children's building blocks as “Go Legs”, otherwise known as Steve Peat, Emily Peat, Mac Grzybowski, Dawn O'Connor, Rhianna Molton, Ashleigh Molton, Natasha Brown; second was “Shrek In The Pub” with much green paint on show by Maria Apps, Martin Apps, Calvin Gurney, Kimderleigh Turner; third were “Day Of The Dead” by the goulish Anoushka, Heather Crawford, Sue Davey, Sarah, Katrina Drummond, Lyz Dorey.
The Mixed Age category winners were the “R2D3-Legged Pub Crawl”, James Powles, Will Powles and Josh Powles; second “Where's The Other Wallys?”, S. Tait and Morgan Tait and third “The Witch and The Wizard”, Richard and Nina Wilkes.
Once Chris Clarance blew the whistle at noon the runners, hoppers and racers moved off en masse after their first tipple at The Ness.
The overall winners first team home to the finish line on the beach near the ferry shelter were “The Snowmen” Roger Easterbrook and Lee Turner who are fast becoming regular names on the winners cup... how many years can they keep up their great teamwork?
The Under 18’s category race winners were “Up The Chiefs” Henry and Jack; the Groups “Last Minute” Ivor & his sons and Mixed Age “Rock Solid Triathalon” F & S Wickham.
Everyone who completed the course received a much coveted medal, whilst some teams did not make it past the first pub stop and a couple of teams making last ditch efforts to reach the finishing line even after the marshals had finished. Thank you all again for all of your efforts!
The Shaldon Water Carnival committee would like to say a big thank you to those who helped marshal the route and do the bucket collections, which raised £129.88; also to the landlords and landladies of The Clifford Arms, Shaldon Conservative Club, The Ferryboat Inn, The Shipwrights Arms, The London Inn and The Ness Bar & Restaurant for all their support, supplying staff and sustenance for the running teams. Thanks also to Chris Clarance for being a superb Master of Ceremonies and Commentator in Chief and to Anne-Marie Morris, Tony Ryan and Sheila Malynn who judged the fancy dress competition.
We look forward to seeing everyone next year.
