2014 Water Carnival Day
Despite the rainy forecast for Saturday, locals and visitors streamed into Shaldon to make our 54th Shaldon Water Carnival another huge success. Those who came were rewarded for their faith in the British weather and were treated to sunshine and all day amusement.
The Royal Party officially opened the Carnival at 10am and this was followed by the Sand Sculpture competition, which this year was based on sea monsters. This year's Colouring Competition also followed the sea monster theme and both activities allowed the children’s imaginations to run riot!
The Crab Collecting competition was as popular as ever with The Clipper Quay full of hopefuls with their crab lines and nets looking to catch that whopper!
To keep everyone amused through the day, in addition to our traditional games of Hook-a Crab, Splat-a-rat, Slide-a-Pint and the Coconut Shy, this year we introduced a Children's Games Tent with traditional games such as Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Name the Bear, Hoopla and Guess the Number of Sweets in the Jar, all of which proved extremely popular. The Bouncy Castle and Pillow Fights kept the more energetic amused whilst The Back Beach Boyz from Teignmouth produced rousing renditions of traditional and popular sea shanties. Lots of local food and drink was consumed and Alan Austin’s magic and balloon shows proved a huge hit once again as children crowded around to watch. We were also treated to another seamless demonstration from the RNLI... after they had returned from attending a real emergency, well done guys!
Shaldon’s Carnival Royalty led the fancy dress parade from the school and through the village. We love and appreciate the effort and thought that goes into taking part in this parade, delighting spectators with some fantastic, bright and colourful costumes.
The unique Parade of Decorated boats was again amazing this year. Crowds filled up the beach on both sides of the Teign to watch (to name but a few!) “The Owl and the Pussycat”, “The Orange Army”, “The Commonwealth Games” and we even had “Bats in Venice”! Well done to all entrants... what imaginations you all have!
Early evening saw children dancing on The Green with some lively entertainment and disco music from Alan Austin.
The UnOriginals, after their success last year were back again for the late night stint with their high energy performance which kept the crowds on The Green dancing, whilst Orsman's delicious BBQ food helped keep up those energy levels! A great end to a truly wonderful Water Carnival Day.
There will be lots of photographs here on our website www.shaldonwatercarnival.co.uk to help you to savour the spirit of the day. We look forward to seeing you there next year.
On behalf of Shaldon Water Carnival Committee, we would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who came to watch, take part and support the event. The hard work of the committee, their army of helpers and support from our sponsors allow us to keep moving forward with this Carnival and the other three annual events that we organise. Money raised at our events goes towards local clubs, charities and organisations which are often connected to young people. If you would like to help build on the success of our community group, take a look through our website and please do get in touch... we would love to meet you!

We never like to disappoint or disqualify teams but unfortunately this year we did disqualify one of the boat parade teams. Part of the way the world has evolved has entrenched us all in Health and Safety and a liability culture.
If you take a look at any Carnival website these days they all include a rule about not throwing objects (inc sweets, flour or water bombs) into the crowd, nor use any form of water pistol or squirty bottles.
Unfortunately for those who enjoy doing this, here in Shaldon we have to also abide by these rules and by doing so create a safe environment for spectators at our Water Carnival.
In 2013 we had several complaints from members of the public who were hit by water bombs being launched from the decorated boat parade towards the beach. Our insurance cover took a considerable knock as well – the You-Tube video frightened off many insurance companies and we were nearly left in a position of not being able to hold the parade. As such we have had to include a rule of which all Boat Parade entrants were made aware this year, see below:-
Rules of Entry
Thank you for your understanding.

- In the interest of safety, water bombs and water cannons cannot be thrown or used during the parade, boats ignoring this request will be disqualified and asked to leave the parade (the £25 given to entrants will also be withdrawn).
Thank you for your understanding.
