2013 Boxing Day 3-legged Race
A record 146 teams (over 400 runners!) entered this year’s Shaldon Boxing Day Fancy Dress 3 Legged Race with the weather being kind to us, hundreds of spectators came out to line Shaldon’s streets. With so many teams, the large open space at The Ness was an excellent place for the judges, Sally Clarence and MP Anne Marie Morris to get a good view of all the inventive costumes and also gave the runners a speedy downhill start. Winners of the adult fancy dress pairs were the well-deserved “Snow Belles” – Lyz Dorey and Karen Hadley, followed in 2nd place by Stuart McAuley and Jon Garrett with their magic carpet and Rhiannon and Ashleigh Molton coming third with their “forking ‘ell” knife and fork entry.
The under 18’s also pulled out all the stops out with Jack Carden and Henry Spencer winning with their “Royal entry.” And Ella Quartly and Maisy Harbert “miming” their way to 2nd place. 3rd went to Ava and Millie Winsborrow with their “presents under the tree” entry.
The Group fancy dress was won by the topical “Save our ferry workshop” created by Ray and Vanessa Edworthy and Jane and Keith Stoyle, followed closely by “Tour de Shaldon” our biggest group (all local lads) getting 2nd place and 3rd by the “False Widows” Joe Heard, Anna and Holly Baumgart and Joao Morais.
Lastly the mixed aged category winners were James Josh and Will Powles dressed as “Pharaoh’s – Builders to the kings.” Susie and Debbie Ashleigh –Thomas clowned their way to second place followed by Zoe and Ella Constantine’s snowmen entry receiving third.
After 6 pit stops around the village downing beverages kindly donated by every pub in Shaldon, the first runners completed the course in just under 17 minutes. Many however never finished the race, choosing to just enjoy the atmosphere around them. The 3 Legged Race could not take place without the generosity of Shaldon’s Publicans and their support for the event is highly valued by the Water Carnival Committee.
Claire Savva, Secretary of SWC said “It is fabulous to see that after a lot of organisation from a small committee of people and huge support from Shaldon’s pub’s and villagers that this fun event is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike and more importantly, raised over £800 for our funds which is donated back into the community, well done to all those who took part in making this another successful Water Carnival event.”
