Record Crowds Turn out for Village Carnival
Amazing weather saw a record number of villagers and holiday makers at our Water Carnival on Saturday making it a stunning success and one of the most memorable in recent years.
The Royal Party officially opened the 53rd Shaldon Water Carnival in the morning and soon the beach was packed with children creating “Royal” themed sand sculptures before racing to fill their buckets with as many crabs as they could catch.
Nearby on the beach, dice were thrown to win a kayak; pillows were bashed about in the pillow fight; Royal sketches were coloured by the children, lots of fun was had on the bouncy castle, artwork displayed by local artists was admired and local food and drink was consumed. Alan Austin’s magic and balloon show proved a huge hit once again as children crowded around to watch and we were also treated to another seamless demonstration from the RNLI.
Later, Shaldon’s Carnival Royalty led the fancy dress parade from the school in their bright and colourful costumes.
The weather was very kind to us, and the sun ensured the beach was filled to bursting with families enjoying their day out in Shaldon.
The Parade of Decorated boats was particularly amazing this year for the crowds who filled up the beach on both sides of the Teign. There were plenty of high jinx, especially with the Pirates riding the waves and getting everyone wet. A visit from the “red arrows”, the near sinking of “Tiny Tanic” and an unexpected fireworks finale from the “Hot, Hot, Hot” entry really got the crowds cheering.
Early evening saw children dancing on The Green while parents relaxed in the sunshine with a drink and a nibble from Orsman’s BBQ.
The Unoriginals stormed the green with their fantastic music and finished off a truly wonderful Water Carnival Day.
“A huge thank you to everyone who came to watch, take part and support the event but particularly to the committee and their army of helpers for all their hard work which made the day possible and the Committee is delighted to have recruited new members who will build on the success of our community group.” Commented Sally Brewer, Chairperson.
