Boxing Day 3-Legged Race 2011
A RECORD 133 teams entered Shaldon’s Boxing Day Fancy Dress 3-Legged race this year with hundreds more lining the streets to cheer them on.
The imagination and effort put into the costumes made the event a spectacle to behold as Smurfs, nuns, leopards, convicts and cowboys, and even a tent, raced between the village pubs with their legs tied together.
The winning fancy dress trophy in the Under 16 category went to a pair of Mutant Christmas presents, Aaron Bayliss and Archie Miles from Shaldon, with a pair of Jelly Beans and Christmas Trees in second and third positions.
The best dressed adults were locals Cheryl Hulbert and Nicky Hawkins adorned head to toe in tea bags as ‘Our Name is Bond – Brooke Bond!’ Runners-ups were scantily clad Viagra Fairies and the Occupy Shaldon tent.
Once Chris Clarance blew the whistle at noon the seething mass of miscreants stumbled, hopped and raced up to The Ness. The fastest pair to return to The Green after their five ‘pit-stops’ were last year’s winners from Teignbridge Trotters who sprinted round the course in just under 12 minutes.
The first team home in the Under 16’s category were Morgan and Sian Tait dressed up as ‘Ringmore On The Run,’ and the
fastest ladies team was Tony’s Tigers, Sally Easterbrook and Sam Yeedon. The last teams to arrive at the finishing line took considerably longer than 12 minutes and some teams didn’t even make it past the first pub stop!
The Shaldon Water Carnival committee who would like to say a big thank you to the Landlords and Landladies of The Clifford Arms, the Shaldon Conservative Club, The Ferryboat Inn, The London Inn and The Ness House, for all their support. Thanks also to Bradleys Estate Agents for supplying raffle prizes for the event, to Chris Clarance for being a superb Master of Ceremonies and Commentator in Chief and to Sally Chapman and Anne-Marie Morris who judged the fancy dress competition.
